HMS Perth was an armed boarding steamer that, on 25th September, 1918 left Gibraltar for Milford Haven on convoy protection duties. In the early hours of 1st October, while on a zig zag course in front of the convoy, she came in contact with the German submarine, U 139 which was approaching the convoy on the surface. Both vessels opened fire and Charles Maile was one of two man aboard HMS Perth who was killed. He was buried at sea the following day. |
